Some nuggests of history...

Canto de’ Dadaioli refers to the junction between Piazza della Repubblica and Via Roma, an area that was once the town's market square. Local records state that in Florence and especially here, dice games (dadioli means dice gamers) were very popular throughout the ages and at all levels of society, despite legal bans and the church's moral condemnation. In this square the game of Zara, played with three dice, was as much a part of the market's activities as the fish and vegetable stalls. Soldiers and courtesans played it, as well as wealthy merchants, young nobles and even captains of the guard. The rigid social structures of the day were temporarily laid aside as participants shouted, laughed and swore, all in the same way, and the scores obtained often resulted in open displays of either anger or joy.
