Dante and Beatrice
February, the month of love par excellence has suggested this post, which you will find divided into five chapters on a weekly basis and which will lead us to the discovery of five great Florentine lovers. Impossible not to start with them. Dante and Beatrice. It is said that the great poet met his beloved for the first time at the age of nine, and then saw her again in a final and fatal meeting at eighteen years of age. One version of the legend follows that this meeting occurred at the ‘Badia Fiorentina’ church, during a mass in which the sweet daughter of the banker Portinari had taken part. However, according to another version, the church was that of ‘Santa Margherita dei Cerchi’, which is located in the street with the same name and which offers an equally plausible hypothesis as the families of the two famous characters lived nearby. It is therefore no coincidence that this small church is also known as the Church of Dante.
