With the arrival of the warm weather season, the city becomes filled with running enthusiasts along the Arno River and people practicing various sports and healthy physical activities out in the open air. Below you will find our recommendations for a few of our favourite activities in order to experience the athletic side of Florence.
Running along the ‘Lungarni’ (the banks of the Arno River).
At sunset the banks of the Arno River begin to fill up with joggers. Everyone running at his or her own pace, with music in their ears and the beauty of Florence in front of their eyes. The view is so amazing from the Park of the Anconella to Lungarno Ferrucci continuing on up to the San Niccolò Bridge, that you will feel as if less effort is needed.
Tennis with a View
A single or a double for all Tennis fans at the Carraia Tennis Club in Via dell'Erta Canina or at Piazzale Michelangelo with the Mentor Net Tennis Association which has two red clay courts and tennis instructors from the Federation for courses and friendly matches.
Green - what a Passion
For those who love the game of golf, a stop at the Club dell'Ugolino on the Chiantigiana road that leads to Impruneta is a must. The writer, Chris Santella, has even counted it as among the "Fifty places to play golf before you die". Playing here, on the 18-hole golf course set among the Tuscan hills, is a 360-degree experience immersed in a landscape of rare beauty.
Sport on the River
Every year the Arno is increasingly proving to be the meeting place for both sports enthusiasts and tourists. In fact, it is not only possible to practice the historic rowing at the Club dei Canottieri, but also the curious sport of the Stand-up paddle boat where one stands up on a sort of table and moves ahead thanks to a paddle. Born in Hawaii, it is a variant of other water sports and improves balance and perception of one’s body. The spectacular route, which will take you under some of Florence’s most beautiful bridges, certainly adds a touch of unique magic to the sporting practice.
